Cambodia has many forested areas and some of the most prolific wetland areas in Southeast Asia, where one can go to watch these and several endangered species of birds. Prek Toal, one of the biggest bird sanctuaries in the region, is where the Milky Storks, Painted Storks, Asian Open Bills, Lesser Adjutants, Greater Adjutants, Spot-billed Pelicans, Black-head Ibis, Glossy Ibis, Grey-head Fish-Eagle, Masked Fin-foot, (just to name a few) make their nests.

Ang Trapeng Thmor is the best place for watching Sarus Cranes. Tmart Boey is the north plain village for Ibis. Also, surrounding the Tonle Sap Great Lake are natural grasslands, which flood annually with the rise and fall of the Mekong River. This unique habitat highly supports the globally endangered Bengal Floricans; it is the only such site in South-east Asia.

The middle stretches of the Mekong River north of Stoeng Treng is another popular spot. There you get to watch other birds including several large waterbird species such as the wintering Manchurian Reed Warblers, Greater Spotted Eagles, and Oriental Plovers. There is also Boeng Chhmar or Koh Kapik and the surrounding islets. Many species of birds including populations of Sarus Cranes have been observed in the rice fields at Kampong Thom.
