More than 20 endangered Sarus cranes spotted in protected area

Boeung Prek Lpou Protected Area saw the arrival of 26 endangered Sarus cranes and conservationists hoping for more to be present at the protected area.

According to the 2020 crane census, Cambodia has 194 cranes and in 2021, the number dropped to 164. This year, the census recorded to just over 150.

According to expert studies, the number of cranes in the world today is between 13,000 and 15,000 in India, Australia, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The Sarus cranes have been present in Cambodia for a long time, with the species depicted in carvings found in the Bayon temple.

In the Kingdom, cranes are often found in three locations: Trapeang Thmor in Banteay Meanchey province, Anlong Pring Landscape Protected Area in Kampot province and Boeung Prek Lpou Landscape Protected Area.

Boeung Prek Lpou Landscape Protected Area is a choice habitat for the birds and were they stay to feed from December to February every year, during their breeding season.

The Boeung Prek Lpou Landscape Protected Area, located in Takeo province, is designated as a sanctuary for the endangered species. The Ministry of Environment has also been working with partner organizations to conserve cranes and their habitats. Park rangers regularly patrol the protected area and researchers study the effects of climate change on the wetlands and the population.
