The Cambodia Sailing Federation will conduct a two-day event at the Bay of Light development zone in Ream commune, Prey Nob district of Sihanouk, to give the public an opportunity to experience sailing.

The Cambodia Sailing Federation has collaborated with the Bay of Light to organise a public sailing demonstration. Everyone is invited to visit and try out sailing for free. The event includes free instruction in sailing techniques taught by experienced federation coaches and athletes.

The public event is set to take place this Saturday and Sunday.

The federation is preparing five classes of sail boats to host demonstrations and free trials, including Windsurf boards, WindFoils, ILCA Sailboats, Byte Sailboats, and Optimist Sailboats.

The event begins at 9.30 to 11am and again from 2 to 4.30pm.

“This event is part of our effort to promote the sport and help more people to learn about it,” the federation said.

Sailing is one of the kingdom’s fastest-growing sports, and Cambodian athletes already won local and international achievements.

Last year at the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia, the national sailing team won two medals. They earned one silver medal in Windsurfing RS: One, and a bronze in Windsurfing RS: X.

Sailing was one of 16 sports in which Cambodia competed at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China in September of last year. However, the team did not bring home any sailing medals.

In February this year, two Cambodian athletes won medals at the 43rd Singapore Open Windsurfing & Foiling Championship and Techo Asian Championship 2024 in Singapore.

Sem Brospov earned a silver medal and Keo Phearon won a bronze in the Windsurfing Techno 293 Plus Open category.

The medals marked another watershed moment for the Cambodia Sailing Federation, as their success was the first time Cambodian windsurfers won medals at a tournament outside of Cambodia.

The federation is committed to taking the sport to a higher level, with plans to send competitors to more local and regional events. The federation feels that more participation will give athletes the opportunity to hone their talents and prepare them for future competitions to better represent Cambodia on the international stage.

The federation said that it thanks all the athletes, coaches and federation president Tang Gordon and vice-president Thong Rathasak for their tireless efforts to promote the sport to an ever-growing audience.
