International runners set to compete in Aug 6 Angkor Wat marathon

The Phnom Penh Marathon Committee will host the 8th Khmer Empire Marathon on August 6 in front of Angkor Wat temple in Siem Reap province.

Last year’s 7th edition of the event attracted more than 3,000 runners from 49 countries.

According to the committee, the Khmer Empire Marathon offers an exceptional opportunity for runners around the world to experience a smooth road race course that winds its way through nearly 40 world-heritage listed ancient temples, a protected forest and the rice fields of local villagers.

“Contestants will enjoy the unique experience of running in an ancient atmosphere amid natural scenery, in the heart of the era of the Angkor Empire,” said the committee.

Sem Phalla, general manager of the Phnom Penh International Half Marathon, told The Post on June 26 that ancient Cambodia – known as the Khmer Empire – was the most powerful empire in Southeast Asia from the 9th to the 13th centuries. Angkor was the central seat of power for this great empire.

He described the marathon as designed to commemorate the merits and reputation of Cambodian ancestors, the ancient civilisation of the Khmer people. He noted that Angkor is recognised as the largest pre-industrial urban center in the world.

“The Cambodian organisers, and our domestic and international partners, invite professional and amateur runners from around the world to participate this exceptional marathon event to show friendship, and support the impoverished children and those living with disabilities living in Cambodia,” he said.

“We are waiting to offer you all a warm welcome to this beautiful race in the heart of the ancient Khmer civilisation,” he said.
