Closing Remarks by
H.E Dr. THONG KHON, Minister of Tourism, and
President of National Committee for Clean City Assessment on
Consultative Seminar on Supporting Mechanism Establishment for “One Tourist, One Tree”
January 15, 2013, Phnom Penh Hotel

Respectfully,
- Excellencies, Lok Chumteavs, Ladies and Gentlemen!

Once again, on behalf of the Ministry of Tourism, National Committee for Clean City Assessment and on my own behalf, I would like to deeply thank Governors, Excellencies, Lok Chumteavs, Ladies and Gentlemen, related institutions, youth, youth association and private sectors who spend their valuable time to mainly consult on “One Tourist, One Tree” campaign today.

Also, my profound thanks go to the speakers who mainly spend their tight schedule sharing practical knowledge, experiences, and new findings to support the efforts of the “One Tourist, One Tree” Campaign.

As Excellencies, Lok Chumteavs, Ladies and Gentlemen are well informed this morning through the presentations by the honorable speakers and consultation; we believe that the efforts of the “One Tourist One Tree” campaign is crucial and necessary to sustain the development of tourism in particular the Green Tourism—the current trends and the basic needs to guarantee the improvement and competition. With this, we can strengthen the socio-economic development in order to keep the stable growth in the long run with equity for humanity and the earth today and in the future.

Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen!

The concept of Clean and Green is basically necessary and important in the time that the whole world is moving forwards in the Green Era. In this sense, the campaign of “One Tourist, One Tree” is parallel with the development model of “Clean and Green’’ which is now the most suitable and smartest choice to ensure the sustainability  and balance of  socio-economy and environment by stating that: Let’s us “Think Tourism, Act Tourism” toward Clean and Green.

Clearly, to move towards Clean and Green, the Royal Government of Cambodia has been implementing practical strategic plans and clear campaigns such as the contest on “Clean City Clean Resort Good Service” and “A Clean City, No Scattered Plastic Bags” and so forth. Moreover, the Ministry of Tourism and National Committee for Clean City Assessment in collaboration with related institutions and private sectors have been pushing the campaign on “One Tourist, One Tree” in order to persuade national and international tourists as well as the whole publics to participate in “A Couple, Two Trees”, “One Youth, One Tree”, and “One Baby, One Tree”

Starting from this seminar, we can conclude that the salient ideas and concepts adhere to the campaign of “One Tourist, One Tree” leading to managing and attentive mechanism of Tourist Parks as well as Marriage Parks. Therefore, to sustain the effectiveness and longevity of the operations, precise and supporting legal regulations need to be approved by the Royal Government of Cambodia on the campaign of “One Tourist, One Tree” which is highly to be signed by  Samdech Techo, Prime Minister. With his brilliant approval, National Committee for Clean City Assessment will determine the standard of tourist parks

To implement the legal regulations effectively, the practical mechanisms are as follows:

  1. I. The Royal Government of Cambodia

The Royal Government of Cambodia initiates the campaign of “One Tourist, One Tree” stipulating the

policies and legal regulations to publicize internationally and strengthen the capacity building of how to plant trees, how to take care of trees, how to explain the advantages of planting trees, how to present types of trees, how to disseminate the information to tourists by the webpage www.onetouistonetree.com. As a result, we are planning to found supporting foundation of “One Tourist, One Tree” campaign which income comes from selling small trees and other legal sources. Obviously, the official announcement on “Clean City Contest” held on 27 February 2012, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo HUN SEN, Prime Minister highly assigned the Ministry of Tourism and National Committee for Clean City Assessment in association with related ministries and institutions, under national administration, private sectors, and national and international NGOs to make this campaign smoothness, success and sustainability.

  1. II. Private Sectors, NGOs and Financial Institutions

Private sectors/ companies, communities, NGOs/civil sectors and related exclusive financial institutions—tourist park inventors are the key players to publicize the awareness and abide by “One Tourist, One Tree” campaign which is a new tourism catalyst. At the same time, staff, communities, NGOs or enterprises that do well in this activity will be certified and appreciated by the Royal Government of Cambodia. Plus, tourism practitioners such as hotels and tourist agents are obliged to promote the public awareness or include the program of “One Tourist One Tree” in the package of tourists who come to visit Cambodia in voluntary acts.

Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen!

I would like to express my profound thanks once again to Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen who always closely cooperate with the Ministry of Tourism and National Committee for Clean City Assessment in promoting tourism sector with sustainability and responsibility. Also, I would like to appeal to all of you to disseminate this meaningful seminar to publics, related sectors and in particular to national and international tourists so that we can gain full support both spirits and actions on “One Tourist, One Tree” campaign.

In this sense, we all will put our actions into practice as it mentions in awareness booklet of the essence of planting trees and this will lead to the development of green economy in the future. We all are the goodwill ambassadors, and the most crucial practitioners to bring about success of this campaign. I strongly urge all of you to contribute in this campaign in order to attract national and international tourists to get involved in this meaningful act. Moreover, I recommend under national administration, department tourism in cities and provinces to push and promote the concepts of building up the standard tourism parks with the events and entertainment activities of “One Tourist One Tree” campaign. In this regard, tourist park is considered as one of new experiential attractive tourism products which leads Cambodia to Clean and Green.

Finally, I would like to thank Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen and wish all of you happiness and the four gems of Buddhist blessings: longevity, nobility, health and strengths.

May I declare to close the consultative meeting now.

Thank you!
