JOINT MEDIA STATEMENT
of the 2nd Meeting CLMV TOURISM MINISTERS
06 December 2013, Thansur Bokor Highland Resort,
Kampot Province, Cambodia

 

  1. The Second Meeting of Tourism Ministers of Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Viet Nam (hereinafter referred to CLMV), was held on 06 December 2013 at Thansur Bokor Highland Resort, Kampot Province, Cambodia, in conjunction with the Sea Festival under the theme “Blue Sea and Green City” of the 9th World Congress of the Most Beautiful Bay in the World Club and 32nd GMS Working Tourism Group Meeting. The Meeting was chaired by H.E. Dr. Thong Khon, Minister of Tourism of Cambodia.
  2. The Meeting was convened to discuss the implementation of the Joint Plan on CLMV Tourism Cooperation 2013 – 2015 signed by CLMV Tourism Ministers in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on 14 September 2012 and in line with the Joint Statement of the 6th CLMV Summit held in Vientiane, Lao PDR on 13 March 2013, which has recognized the importance of linkage for ensuring sustainable and responsible tourism among the CLMV Countries and further increase the attractiveness of the CLMV sub-region as one of the world’s tourism destinations.
  3. The Meeting took note the increased number of international tourist arrivals in CLMV countries in 2012 which reached over 14.8 million with significant increase in tourism revenues, and the further increasing of 12.6 million visitor arrivals in the first 9 months of 2013 with 24.3 percent growth compare to the same period of 2012. The Ministers commend the efforts of CLMV Tourism Working Group (TWG) and the CLMV Senior Officials Meeting in Tourism (SOM-T) for putting in place tourism strategy and support to set the major goals for CLMV tourism cooperation under the theme “Four Countries – One Destination”, targeting 25 million international visitors of which 4 million are intra-visitors by 2015.
  4. Pursuant to the Joint Plan on CLMV Tourism Cooperation 2013 – 2015, the Ministers agreed to support more coordination approach to tourism development, and had instructed the TWG and SOM to implement priority projects of action programme through concrete and positive results of these initiatives for the benefit of the CLMV Countries, such as culture and heritage tourism, nature-based tourism, community-based tourism, river-based and cruise tourism.
  5. The Ministers shared the common view that it is necessary to further support each other through possible actions by actively participating in international tourism events, travel fairs and exhibitions organized in or by CLMV countries, design and launch the adopted tourism logo and slogan, create joint-marketing materials and use online channels to raise the awareness of “Four Countries – One Destination” to introduce the CLMV destinations within region and to major common target markets.
  6. The Ministers stressed on the necessity of enhancing closer coordination in improving of respective CLMV Countries’ tourism websites and information database; regularly sharing with each other their information, experiences and best practice on tourism development. The Ministers agreed to invite interested international organizations and financial institutions and other development partner countries for supporting the sustainable, responsible tourism development and in particular the capacity building for quality and standardization in tourism services of CLMV Countries, and encourage the private sector to more actively involved in tourism development process.
  7. The Ministers agreed on a mechanism for strengthening cooperation, according to which CLMV Ministerial Meeting on Tourism; CLMV Senior Officials Meeting on Tourism (SOM-T) will be organized back-to-back with ACMECS Ministers Meeting on tourism and on the sideline of the Summit. For the CLMV Tourism Working Group Meeting will be convened once a year on the sidelines of the GMS or ASEAN Tourism Working Group Meeting. The Ministers also supported flexible cooperation mechanisms, bilaterally and multilaterally among a number of the CLMV Countries, and between the CLMV Countries with other partners;
  8. The Ministers welcome Myanmar as the host and Chairman of the forthcoming Meeting and agreed to meet again at the Third CLMV Tourism Ministers’ Meeting in 2015 in Mandalay.
  9. The Ministers expressed the appreciation to Cambodia for its hospitality and arrangement as the host of the Second CLMV Tourism Ministers’ Meeting.
